The Newton High School Four Speaker Debate Team competed at the Kansas High School Activities Association Class 5A Four Speaker Debate Championships at Emporia High School Jan. 13.
Newton finished third overall with a record of 10 wins, six losses at the tournament. Taking first overall was undefeated Overland Park-Blue Valley Southwest. Lansing took second at 11-5.
Chase Cassil and Kenton Fox spoke on the negative side while Khalil Kumar and Fletcher Hummingbird spoke on the affirmative. Erik Brown and John Jantzen served as alternates.
"The teams that finished ahead of us spent almost all their tournaments out of state and are ranked nationally," Williams said.
Blue Valley finished third in the nation one year ago, with half of that team returning this year.
In high school debate competition, each debater gives a constructive speech, stands for a period of questioning, gives a set of answers and makes a rebuttal speech.
In two speaker debate the team of Serenity Davidson and Mariah McDonald finished 3-3 in preliminary rounds.
