Bethel signs

Labette player

Bethel College softball coach David Middleton signed Lyons High School grad and Labette Community College player Laura Pineda to a letter of intent to play for the Threshers beginning in the fall.

Pineda is a third baseman for the LCC Cardinals, where she .230 as a freshman with eight home runs, 33 RBIs, 13 doubles and three triples. She stole 18 bases in 20 attempts, drawing 20 walks.

She also pitched 1.1 innings, allowing no earned runs on three hits with a strikeout.

Labette went 26-27 last season, reaching the NJCAA Division II, District E consolation semifinals.

She begins her sophomore season this spring.

As a senior at Lyons High School, she hit .493 with five home runs, 26 RBIs and 11 doubles. She had 11 stolen bases and a .980 fielding percentage. She helped lead Lyons to an 18-5 season, reaching the Class 3A state tournament.

She also played for the Kansas Blue Sox club team.

"Laura has been the starting third baseman for Labette, and can also play shortstop and pitch as well," Middleton said. "She has been rock solid for the Cardinals. Laura has been extremely successful as a power hitter, and has the ability to move runners. She's had numerous home runs over her career, and we look forward to adding a bat like this immediately to our lineup.

"Laura will bring leadership and experience to our team. Off the field, Laura brings a strong work ethic and great values to Bethel. She will be successful on and off the field."

Pineda intends to major in accounting at Bethel.
