McPHERSON — The Bethel College women’s basketball team made it two in a row in KCAC play, stopping McPherson College 54-51 Saturday in McPherson.

The Thresher defense held McPherson to 16 points in the second half.

The win lifts the Threshers to 6-12, 2-8 in KCAC play.

The Threshers jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first 2 1/2 minutes of play. McPherson responded with the next five points. Bethel led by five at the end of the quarter, 18-13.

McPherson opened the second quarter with a 7-2 run to tie the game in the first 3:02 of the quarter. Bethel responded with an 8-2 run, but the Bulldogs replied with a run of their own to lead 35-31 at the half.

The Threshers pulled away by six in the third quarter. McPherson cut the Bethel lead to one at the end of the period, 43-42.

A Karlie Schroeder trey to open the fourth quarter put Bethel up by four, but again the Bulldogs came back to tie. Tied 48-48, Abby Schmidt hit a shot with 3:16 to play to put Bethel back in the lead. Fantasia Johnson followed with a shot with 1:47 to play.

McPherson replied with three of six free throws. Johnson hit a basket with 11 seconds to play to put Bethel back up by three.

Schmidt led Bethel with 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots. Schmidt hit eight of 10 free throws. Schroeder followed with 11 points.

Hesston High grad Cami Richardson led the Bulldogs with 13 points. McPherson drops to 9-8, 5-5 in KCAC play.

Bethel plays at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Oklahoma Wesleyan, which is 13-5, 6-3 in KCAC play. The Eagles snapped a three-game losing streak with a 67-59 win over Kansas Wesleyan.

SCHMIDT HONORED AGAIN — For the fourth time this season, Abby Schmidt received KCAC weekly honors. The freshman was named defensive player of the week for the week ending Sunday.

In two games, both BC wins, Schmidt scored 35 points with 20 rebounds, seven blocked shots with three steals. She was 12 of 16 from the field and 11 of 16 from the line.

It’s the third time this season Schmidt has been named defensive player of the week. She also was named offensive player of the week for the first week of the season.
