WICHITA — The Wichita Thunder got back on the winning side of the ledger with a 5-1 win over the Kansas City Mavericks Friday in ECHL play at the INTRUST Bank Arena.
Wichita took command early after a 3-0 lead in the first period and adding a goal in the second.
Johnny Daniels led the Thunder with two goals and an assistin his debut with the team. Ralph Cuddemi scored a goal with two assists. Chad Butcher and Dyson Stevenson each scored a goal. Lane Bauer distributed three assists.
Joel Rumpel stopped 25 of Kansas City’s 26 shots in goal for the Thunder. Mason McDonald had 26 saves against 31 Wichita shots.
The Thunder entered the game losing four of the last five, while Kansas City had lost three of its last five.
Wichita improves to 18-7-2-0, while Kansas City drops to 14-15-0-1. Wichita is in third place in the ECHL Mountain Division, two points behind second-place Idaho and five points behind Colorado, which is tied with Florida for the overall league lead.
Wichita hosts Kansas City again at 7:05 p.m. today.
DOORBOSCH LOANED TO BELLEVILLE — Thunder defenseman Jamie Doornbosch was placed on loan to the Belleville Senators of the American Hockey League.
In 17 games with the Thunder this season, Doonbosch has a goal with seven assists. The second-year pro is making his third foray into hockey’s Class AAA league. He played eight games with the Binghampton Senators last season without scoring a point. That team moved to Belleville in the off-season. He also played two games this season with the Bakersfield Condors, scoring an assist.
