HALSTEAD — In a clash of a pair of newcomers to the Class 3A coaches rankings, the sixth-ranked Halstead Dragons downed 10th-ranked Sedgwick 64-37.

Halstead took command of the game early, leading 24-6 after the first quarter and 36-16 at the half. Halstead continued to pull away in the second half.

Daphne Williams led the Dragons with 32 points, hitting nine 3-pointers. Karenna Gerber scored 14 points and Kayla Newman added 11.

Grace Thompson scored 19 points for Sedgwick.

Halstead is 5-0 and plays Friday at Smoky Valley. Sedgwick is 3-2 and plays Conway Springs at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at McPherson College in the HOAL-CPL Challenge.

HESSTON — The Hesston Swather girls rebounded from their first loss of the year, stopping Smoky Valley 54-25 Tuesday in Hesston.

Hesston led 6-4 after the first quarter and 28-12 at the half. A 14-8 third quarter put things away.

Kailey Jo Ince led Hesston with 14 points. Elise Kaiser added 10.

Jacque Hulse, Jordan Otto and Ashlyn Bryant each scored five points for Smoky Valley, 0-4.

Hesston is 4-1 and hosts Kingman Friday.

CALDWELL — The Berean Academy boys’ basketball team used a 20-10 fourth quarter to get by Caldwell 49-36 Tuesday in Caldwell.

Tied 12-12 after the first quarter, Berean led 21-18 at the half and 29-26 after three quarters.

Berean went 11 of 12 from the line in the fourth quarter.

Devin Rust led Berean with 20 points. Kiegan Vogt added 11.

Corbin Rice scored 13 points for Caldwell, 3-2.

Berean Academy is 5-0 and plays Garden Plain at 8:15 p.m. Friday in the HOAL-CPL Classic at McPherson College.
