LEAVENWORTH — For the second straight game, the Bethel College women’s basketball team saw a big comeback fall short after digging too big a hole.

Bethel fell to the University of Saint Mary 69-61 Saturday in KCAC play in Leavenworth.

Bethel trailed 27-4 after the first quarter, but got back within 10 at the half, 42-32. Bethel trailed 57-38 after three quarters, but got as close as six in the final period.

Tiani White led Saint Mary with 18 points, followed by Ashley Hinkle with 12 and Candy De Los Reyes with 10.

Jade Smith led Bethel with 20 points off the bench, her season high. Fantasia Johnson added 14 points.

Abby Schmidt had 12 points, but finished three points short of her third straight double-double.

Saint Mary improves to 6-6, 3-4 in KCAC play. Bethel drops its seventh straight, falling to 4-9, 0-7 in KCAC play.

Bethel plays its final conference game of the calendar year at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Ottawa. The Braves are 3-10, 1-6 in KCAC play after a 61-51 loss at McPherson.

SCHMIDT HONORED AGAIN — For the second straight week, Bethel freshman Abby Schmidt was named the KCAC defensive player of the week. In two games, Schmidt scored 43 points with 29 rebounds and six blocked shots.

It is the third time this season the freshman from Newton has taken KCAC weekly honors.
