County commission to meet

The Board of Harvey County Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. Dec. 11 in the meeting room of the Harvey County Courthouse, 800 N. Main.

The commission will also attend a quad-county meeting.



BOE to meet

The Newton USD 373 Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 in the meeting room of McKinley Administrative Center, 308 E. First.



Tootsie roll drive totals announced

Knights of Columbus Council No. 976 in Newton handed out checks from the annual tootsie roll drive — held Oct. 13, 14 and 15 — to Circle of Friends Harvey County Special Education, Trinity Heights Respite Care and Harvey/Marion County Special Olympics. The Knights of Columbus Special Olympics basketball tournament in Hays also received proceeds from the tootsie roll drive. Total proceeds received from handing out tootsie rolls amounted to $6,211 and all of the proceeds were distributed.

A total of 134 volunteers (over 200 volunteer hours) helped out by collecting donations. Volunteers were at Wal-Mart and north and south Dillons.

Open house draws a crowd

The Newton Chamber of Commerce's annual Christmas holiday open house had 500 N. Main bustling on Thursday. Snacks and refreshments were offered by the chamber and several other businesses at 500 N. Main, which were also decked out in Christmas lights and other holiday decór in a lead up to the downtown Parade of Lights.
