John Esau, a former Newton Board of Education member and president of Walton State Bank, told The Newton Kansan this week he was misquoted by columnist Jason Mitchell.

Mitchell wrote in his Oct. 19 column: "Will they actually spend $12 million on Walton or realize just what John Esau said, Walton can be fixed for $1 million then shuffle the other $11 million somewhere else?"

"I never said that, at all," Esau told The Kansan.

Esau told The Kansan he believed the Walton project could be done for less than $11 million, however, he has not said it could be done for $1 million.
