A search of a missing .22 rifle ended when a theft suspect was able to lead police officers to where the weapon was hidden.

Gabriel Gordon, 19, Wichita allegedly committed a theft, taking a rifle from a home in the 800 block of SE Second Oct. 4. He was seen walking near Slate Creek Elementary with the rifle, which caused police to issue a lockdown at 2:27 p.m.

Gordon was taken into custody in the 900 Block of E. Fourth, though he did not have the weapon when law enforcement arrested him. He was arrested on charges of theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.

After he was booked and charged, a Newton Police officer asked Gordon to make another attempt at helping find the weapon. He had assisted in the search previously but those efforts had come up empty.

Gordon was able to help officers locate the gun, hidden in a pile of leaves and rubbish in Roosevelt Park on East Broadway.
