For some, the day started a little bit early with a walk — or breakfast with friends.

The only way to be in Northridge Elementary prior to 7:50 a.m. was to eat breakfast in the cafeteria or be part of "walking club."

Walking club is a daily activity under the watchful eye of physical education teacher Mario Nava or principal Amy Wells, or both. Students walk laps in the gymnasium while talking among themselves or listening to music selected by Nava.

For others the day started a little later — many escorted by their families as they ran or walked into Northridge Elementary for the first day of the 2017-18 school year.

The bell rang at 7:50 a.m., signaling the start of the year. That first-day bell rang at each school in the Newton USD 373 district.

Not that anyone was counting on this day, but there are about 160 days of school remaining — with the last day scheduled in May.
