The shade of the trees in Athletic Park covered the hundreds of 4-H families and supporters that gathered together for a picnic Tuesday evening.

Enjoying homemade food, side dishes and desserts, members of 4-H groups from around Harvey County chatted about the projects they were preparing for the upcoming fair.

Deb and Galen Dreier of Hesston were pleased to see the program growing and thriving.

"Some of my closest friends were my 4-H friends," Deb said.

Now, the children the Dreiers are raising as surrogate grandchildren are in 4-H. They participate in sewing, buymanship and show sheep.

"That's the neat thing about it, they're starting to include all kinds of things," Galen said.

The evening's program included a fashion show, in which the Dreier's granddaughters modeled the bathrobes made of brightly-colored fleece they had sewn.

Other ensembles included formal wear, school clothes and athletic outfits.
