BNSF, one of the largest employers in Newton, Wednesday announced a change in the workforce at its Newton facility. Some of the jobs will move to other locations, though there will not be any layoffs.

According to a statement by BNSF spokesman Andy Williams, the staffing changes will be effective July 18. The number of impacted employees was not announced.

"There will be no layoffs," Williams told the Kansan via email. "A majority of employees will remain in Newton. ... I'm trying to stop rumors"

In a statement, Williams wrote: "As BNSF aligns resources with changing customer demand and traffic flows, the company will shift some rail switching operations and positions from the Newton yard to yards in Hutchison and Argentine (Kansas City, Kan.,) and shift some mechanical work to locations with existing capacity."

According to the statement, the railroad will be working with employees to relocate them at other facilities. The railroad will maintain a presence in Newton after the changes are made.
