This weekend will be the 69th annual Mexican-American Softball Tournament at Kelsch Field in Athletic Park.
1 A celebration
Opening ceremonies, this year at 6 p.m. Friday, are always a celebration. This year, however, there is added meaning to those ceremonies — there is something a little bit special about the annual Newton Mexican-American Athletic Club Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
The 2017 Hall of Fame induction class is made up entirely of Viet-Nam veterans. During the opening ceremonies, all veterans in attendance will be invited to come on the field.
Opening ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. Friday at Kelsch Field. Games begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday. Championship games are slated to begin at 5 p.m. Sunday at Kelsch Field.
Twelve teams are expected to compete this weekend in a modified triple-elimination bracket. The question at hand is if someone can knock off five-time defending champion Kansas City Indios. Those who will try include the Newton Mexican-American Athletic Club, the Hutchinson Blue Jays, the Kansas City Locos, the Wichita Basic Brown, the Emporia Black Sox, the Salina Bonillas, Newton Solo Porque, the Kansas City Bandedos, Newton Los Viejos and the Kansas City Angels. Solo Porque is a pick-up team of the area’s younger players.
Remember Chuck's Familia Resturant on Main Street? Gone for more than a decade, many still remember the food — espeically the special dip served with tortilla chips. The family who operated Chuck's will be back in action this weekend, operating concessions for the Mex-Am tournament.
