1. Play that funky music


Whisky River Band will be featured during the first annual Open Mic Music Festival on June 24 at Walnut Grove Shelter at West Lake Park. Any band or individual musician is invited to participate. To be featured, call 316-283-5420. This is a free event.


Special camping rates will be offered to participating performers. Admission to the musical event is free.




2. Celebrate the country


People of all ages are being invited to Grand Central Country Fair Fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 24.


Grand Central, located at 122 E. Sixth St. in Newton, serves as the senior center for area residents, hosting dance classes, pool lessons, game times and programs for anyone age 55 or older.


The event is meant to bring in dollars that will go towards Grand Central's operating and building maintenance costs.


The Country Fair Fundraiser will feature entertainment including line dancers and kid's games, which can be played for a quarter apiece. Several tables of antiques for sale will be displayed at the Country Fair Fundraiser. Grand Central members are also putting their sewing skills to use and are creating items to sell. Bake sale items and a raffle for gift baskets will also be available.



3. Head to the barnyard

Family Fun Time at the Library continues this week, with Barnyard Puppet Theatre at 1:30 p.m. June 21. Laugh along with the NPL’s own Barnyard Puppets — operated by staff from the children's department of the Library. Admission is free.



4. Meet an author


Bring your children for a fun morning at Faith & Life Bookstore, 606 Main, from 10 a.m. to noon June 24. Mary Ellen Tippin will read and sign her newest children's book, "Cozy the Lamb." This book is illustrated by Melanie Regier.



5. Find a bargain

A community garage sale will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 24 at Newton Recreation Center, 415 N. Poplar. Admission to the sale is free. For more information call 316-283-7330.
