GREAT BEND — From the opening whistle to the final buzzer, it was all McPherson High School.
Taylor Robertson scored her usual 22 points, but five other Bullpups stepped up and scored at least six points as McPherson cruised to a 69-38 win over Great Bend.
“I thought we had better energy than they did right out of the start,” head coach Chris Strathman said. “We were locked in, and we stayed aggressive all night.”
The Bullpups hadn’t played since Jan. 28, but there were no apparent signs of rust early on. McPherson jumped out to a 12-3 lead, led by a pair of first quarter 3-pointers by Claire Yowell. Robertson and Riley Hett both picked up two fouls in the first quarter, but it only paved the way for other starters and role players to step up.
The Bullpups doubled up Great Bend in the first quarter, 20-10, and continued the momentum into the second quarter. Emma Yowell drained a 3-pointer at the 3:05 mark to extend the McPherson lead to 16, but Great Bend went on a 7-3 run to close the half to narrow the McPherson lead to 36-24.
McPherson outscored Great Bend 19-8 in the third quarter and 33-14 in the second half. Great Bend is a solid team with no bad losses. Even Strathman said he was a little surprised of the margin of victory.
Robertson scored 13 of her 22 in the second half, while Mandi Cooks and Jaycee Burghart scored eight a piece. The Yowell sisters, Emma and Claire, scored six points, while Hannah Hageman and Jordan Bruner also scored six. Hett pitched in with five and Lakyn Schieferecke added two points to round out the scoring.
“Everybody contributed and did a nice job for us tonight,” Strathman said. “I’m extremely pleased with how we shared the ball tonight.”
McPherson is now 12-3 and is back in league action on Friday when they travel to El Dorado. With only a few weeks left until postseason play, Strathman knows just how important it is to finish the regular season strong.
“These games are preparing us for how the season will be remembered,” Strathman said.
