One man is in jail after a high-speed chase that ended in an accident in Newton.
It started at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday when a Newton Police Officer was passed at high speed in a no passing zone by a white Pontiac Grand Prix.
Officers tried to pull a driver over for speeding, but the man stopped at a train crossing before making a U-turn and took off. The officer gave chase, but lost sight of the Grand Prix.
After a 911 call concerning an accident, police found the driver and the wrecked car. In the 800 block of E. First St. the Grand Prix left the street, hit some trees and careened through the front yard of an apartment building in Newton. The driver was found walking a few blocks away. According to the Newton Police Department, the car was stolen in Wichita about 40 minutes prior to being spotted in Newton.
No one in the home was hurt. Officers said it did not appear that the car caused any structural damage to the building it struck.
LeeAndrew Cummings, 34 of Wichita, was booked on a variety of charges including possession of stolen property, felony fleeing and eluding a police officer, driving under the influence, reckless driving and driving under the influence.
Cummings was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
