NEWTON —

Construction of the Kansas Highway 15 mill and overlay project is set to begin Monday,

The contractor, LaFarge North America, will begin at the south end of the project, working from the south side of the U.S. 50 eastbound off-ramp (near Wal-Mart) to the U.S. 50 westbound off-ramp (across from Dillons). This segment is expected to take six working days to complete.

The next segment will be from Buxman Motors north to First Street, which will take about a month of working days to complete.

The contractor will continue to work northward throughout the summer, all the way to the North Newton boundary at the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

The project calls for asphalt milling, crack repair, asphalt overlay, some curb and gutter repair, and pavement striping. It is expected to be complete by the end of August.

All adjacent homes and businesses will receive construction notifications from the contractor this week. The contractor will coordinate with property owners when patches affect their driveways.

Traffic will remain open on K-15 in one lane each direction. Traffic sequencing and temporary pavement markings will guide drivers through the project.

Work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the first two segments. Construction through the downtown area, from First Street to Eighth Street, will be accomplished after businesses are closed, including some night-time work.
