Hesston duo wins state title

PRAIRIE VILLAGE —

The Hesston High School doubles team of Brett Liechty and Alex Roth finished the season winning the Class 4A state title Saturday at the Harmon Park Tennis Center in Prairie Village.

Roth and Liechty opened play with a win over Sam Schroeder and Adam Greenhaw of Independence in the semifinals. The score wasn’t reported at press time.

In the finals, Roth and Liechty downed Tucker Noyes and Neal Rasmussen of Andover Central 6-4, 6-3.

Roth, a junior, and Liechty, a senior, end the season 33-5.

The Swathers claimed a second-place finish in the team standings.

Independence won the team title with 36 points. Hesston and Topeka Hayden each had 22, but the Swathers took second on the tie-breaker. DeSoto was fourth at 17, followed by Hesston’s league-mate Smoky Valley in fifth at 16. Andover Central scored 14 points, followed by Kansas City Piper at 14, Abilene at 10, Andover at six, Buhler at six and Chanute at five.

Fifth place — Palenske, Abilene def. Konetzni, DeSoto 9-5.

Seventh place — Lee, Andover def. Smith, Hayden 9-3.

DOUBLES

Championship — Liechty-Roth, Hesston def. Noyes-Rasmussen, Andover Central 6-4, 6-2.

Third place — Schroder-Greenhaw, Independence def. Martinek-Bach, Hayden 7-5, 7-5.

Fifth place — Ferguson-Eishabassy, Independence def. Hanks-Peterson, Hayden 9-6.

Seventh place — Peak-Mitchell, Buhler def. Harold-Stutt, Chanute 9-3.
