NEWTON —

The contractor on the Sand Creek restoration project, Utility Contractors Inc., is continuing to move north with construction.

Removal work is ongoing as far north as the Ash Street bridge.

Beginning Monday, Eighth Street will be closed at Elm Street on the east side of the creek. Trucks with material coming out of the creek will be accessing the creek corridor via Elm Street.

Installation of retaining walls continues along the banks south of Seventh Street.

In the next three to four weeks, the contractor will complete most of the construction along the west bank at Athletic Park, leaving only pathway construction and landscaping.

The Fifth Street entrance to the park will then be opened, likely in late August.

All construction schedules are subject to weather conditions. The contractors will be starting work earlier in the day because of high temperatures.

City staff will be available to answer questions about the project from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the third-floor conference room at City Hall.

The meeting is come-and-go, and colorized construction plans will be available for viewing.

Notices about the meeting will be delivered to properties adjacent to the creek from Fifth Street to Ash Street.
