NEWTON —

Cindi Unruh of Newton has been selected a Kansas Woman of Distinction by Dress for Success Wichita.

She will be among 52 honorees at a black-tie reception on Tuesday at the Courtyard by Marriott in Wichita.

This is the first year for the event, which is a fund-raiser for Dress for Success Wichita.

The nonprofit organization promotes economic independence by providing professional attire, a network of support and career development tools to help disadvantaged women.

Unruh has worked in fund-raising for Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton and United Methodist Youthville.

As director of development for the Kansas Humane Society, she began the process of organizing a capital campaign committee to raise funds for a new shelter.

She previously was executive director of the American Heart Association. She was named development director at the Independent Living Resource Center, a nonprofit that helps people with disabilities, in 2008.

She also helped implement a capital campaign for St. Mary Catholic School in Newton and was chairwoman of Newton’s annual Chisholm Trail Festival.

She completed the Leadership Newton and Leadership Kansas programs.
