While Chris Tuohey, manager of Sand Creek Station, was on the cover of a national magazine, he wants desperately to share the spotlight.
“There should have been 30 people on that cover,” Tuohey said.
Turn inside, and you find Tuohey interviewed and featured because of the customer service offered by Sand Creek Station.
Tuohey was one of five golf course managers featured as part of a story called “On the Right Track, five operators moving down the path of profitability.”
“This is like the coach getting interviewed after a victory,” Tuohey said. “People tend to get overlooked.”
That emphasis on customer service is what landed Tuohey and Sand Creek Station in the national publication, and his smiling mug on the cover.
“We are fortunate to have the staff we have here,” Tuohey said. “They work hard, get along well and emphasize a good experience for each golfer. It’s a winning formula, and we are happy with the results.”
He’s not going to keep those secrets of the trade to himself, either. While plans are not yet finalized, Tuohey and the Newton Area Chamber of Commerce are partnering up this spring to start offering “Customer Service Boot Camps” for Newton businesses.
“We all, as a community, have to work together to be proud of and promote Newton,” Tuohey said. “We don’t only represent our business, but our entire community.”
The boot camp will stress the importance of offering, and what is, strong customer service.
And according the Tuohey, there’s really no big secret.
“You build a great team in your business who work together well,” Tuohey said. “You build internally first, then it shows externally.”
With a calendar at the golf course that includes new tournaments — the course will host the Kansas High School Activities Association 5A Championships and Jayhawk League Championships next year — that will attract business to the entire community, Tuohey and his staff taking the lead to help Newton put its best foot forward seems like a natural fit.
“It will bring us closer as a community to work as a team to promote this town,” Tuohey said.
