The Rotary Club of Newton gave a grant of $2,250 to USD 373, which was used to purchase six Wii Fit Plus, 6 Wiis with extra controllers, nunchucks, and battery chargers for Balance Boards (WiiFit) and related physical education equipment.

This equipment will allow the school system to bring current technology into their physical education classes and after-school activities.

The gift of the Wiis will allow physical-education teachers to individualize fitness regimens for students and to heighten activity levels for those students not involved in competitive team sports.

Wii Fit is a benefit to students identified with physical and development delays as the software allows for the level of fitness intensity to be adjusted to the child’s ability, a news release said.

The Wiis become an effective and enjoyable tool for maintaining fitness activities on rainy days when students are unable to run and play outside, the release said.

In addition, to the grant for the Wiis, the Rotary Club of Newton gave the school system grants to send students to Leadership Camp, purchased dictionaries for all third grades in the school district and Harvey County, and helped to purchase the USA flag for the gym at Newton High School.

The cost of these donations is more than $10,000.

The Newton Rotary Club sold fruit through out the year to help fund these projects.

The Rotary Club of Newton is the oldest service club in Harvey County, chartered in 1917
