Newton Family Career and Community Leaders of America members and advisers traveled to Wichita in January to help out at the Ronald McDonald houses.

While there, the group assisted with regular household chores, as well as some outdoor chores. The students and advisers also provided 150 cans of food and $150 as a donation to the houses. The funds were raised during a Newton High School basketball tournament a few months prior.

After working at the Ronald McDonald Houses, the students returned to Newton to help at the Salvation Army. While there, they organized clothing, shoes and hats, as well as collected hangers from the racks and loaded a truck bound for Mexico with items for the less fortunate there.

On Feb. 3, six members competed and two members assisted with district Students Taking Action With Recognition events at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton.

The students gave presentations and competed to attend the state conference in April.

Four students qualified to compete in the State Leadership Conference, which will be April 12 and 13 in Wichita.

The participants also will hear from guest speakers and attend statewide meetings while at the conference.

Newton district event participants were: Rachel Abbas (food innovations), Emily Erickson (timer), Amy Fear (promote and publicize Family Career and Community Leaders of America), Oliva Miller (judge), Melissa Mussman (promote and publicize Family Career and Community Leaders of America), Natisha Phillips (Family Career and Community Leaders of America creed), and Carly Willis (interior design).
