NHS forensics names one champ at state

TOPEKA —

Zach Collins collected his second consecutive state championship in Foreign Extemporaneus speaking Saturday when the Newton High School forensics team traveled to Topeka Shawnee Heights High School for the 5A State Speech Tournament.

Newton had 12 out of 16 events in semifinals; six of those went on to finals.

Individual results are as follows:

Medalists in finals: Madison Owens/Matt Hutton, sixth, Duet; Matt Krehbiel, humorous solo; Seth Williams/Matt Krehbiel, third, Duet; Jessica Garcia, sixth, domestic extemp; and Matt Baumgartner, second, foreign extemp.

Finals qualifiers: Jimmie Norman, 11th, poetry; Chris Ross, eighth, prose, Aubrey Denney/Chris Ross, 10th, duet: Bill Newell, 10th, foreign extemp; Phillip Bradshaw, seventh, domestic extemp; and Zach Collins, 12th, oration. Also comepting were Steven Garcia, impromptu; Zach Koehn, informative; Taylor McCabe-Juhnke, prose; and Aubrey Denney, prose.

Newton finished fifth out of 30 as a team. Results as follows: First, Salina Central 390; second, McPherson 285; third, (tie) KC Sumner Academy 278, Topeka Seimen 278; fifth, Newton 274.

NHS travels to the Desert Lights National speech and tournament in Las Vegas this June. Students had to qualify at the district tournament in April. Jessica Garcia Domestic Extemp, Bill Newell and Zach Collins in Foreign Extemp and Phillip Bradshaw/Katie Stiffler in Policy Debate. Congratulations to all on a great season.
