VFW honors Hesston student with Patriot’s Pen award

The Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary of Whitesell Finnel Post No. 971 Newton announced the 2009-2010 Patriot’s Pen winner.

Samantha Hastings is a sixth grader at Hesston Middle School. She was presented with a monetary award from the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary. She also was selected as the Fifth District winner and was presented with a saving bond and certificate.

This year’s theme was “When is the right time to honor our military heroes?” The contest was open to all students in grades six through eight. The 2010-2011 theme is “Does patriotism still matter?”
