Sound of the Heartland chorus will spread Christmas cheer to Newton and the surrounding community during a Sing-a-thon on Dec. 5.
They will spend the day performing for people who are most in need of special attention this time of year. At no cost to the facility, Sound of the Heartland chorus will visit retirement centers, children’s homes, nursing centers and others.
As a special treat, women singers in Newton, Hesston and surrounding areas are invited to join the chorus as they give this gift of music to the community. Under the direction of Master Director LaDonna Cheatham, guests will be learning holiday music in four-part barbershop style.
The rehearsals start today and will be at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, 1200 Boyd in Newton. Interested singers may contact Sue Moore at (316) 722-9348 to register for the performance opportunity. Singers also can register at the door at 7 p.m. today.
As an opportunity for businesses to share in the event, Sound of the Heartland chorus will accept sponsorships to help defray some of the costs related to the Sing-a-thon. There will be music to purchase, transportation costs, and other expenses. Businesses interested in helping the chorus bring the Christmas spirit to those who could most benefit, contact Sue Moore.
Moore, the Sing-a-thon coordinator, said in a press release that “As the Christmas season approaches, it becomes more clear that sharing our love and music is one of the best ways to celebrate the season. Seeing the reaction of the audience to the music is a real boost to the soul. What a great way to use our talent and share it with the community.”
Sound of the Heartland chorus rehearsals always are open to guests. Women signers of all ages are invited to visit any rehearsal to learn more. Rehearsals are at 7 p.m. Thursdays at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church.
