The Book ReViews Board at its September meeting decided to donate $1,000 each to the following: Agape Resource Center, 106 E. Sixth, Newton; Salvation Army, 314 N. Main, Newton; and Neighbors Store, 263 Main, Halstead. The money is to be used for the purchase of food.

Ron Robinson, director of Agape Resource Center, said the request for food is greater than it has ever been in the past.

“Our dream is that no child in the Newton area go to bed hungry at night,” he said in a news release.

Salvation Army and Neighbors Store report the same increase in demand for food. Neighbors Store also serves people from the Burrton area since no food pantry is available in Burrton. Book ReViews, because of donated books and volunteer labor, has given $15,000 to Harvey County charities in 2009.

Additional volunteers would be helpful, reports Vern Preheim, the manager of the store.
