Two new members have joined the board of directors for the Harvey County Habitat for Humanity. Zach Weaver and Chris Tuohey were elected to serve three-year terms on the governing board of this local not-for-profit organization that provides opportunities for qualifying individuals to achieve ownership of safe and affordable housing in our communities.
Tuohey is the general manager and head golf professional at Sand Creek Station. His interest in this volunteer service comes from his experience with Habitat’s response to Hurricane Katrina. Tuohey was uprooted from New Orleans when Katrina devastated Bayou Oaks where he was the head golf professional and marketing director at the time. Chris and his wife Helen reside in Newton.
Zach Weaver also was elected to a three-year term on the Habitat board.
Tuohey and Weaver join other Habitat for Humanity board members: Gary Hill, chairman; Ron Peters, vice chairman; Blake Kerns, treasurer; Jessie Kaye, secretary; Millie Cherryholms, Aileen McCune, Mike Schmidt, Donovan Schmidt, John Stretcher, Harry Wolfe and Jim Yoder.
Habitat home-owners are selected for the opportunity to purchase a house, based upon specific criteria, including: need, ability to make monthly mortgage payments and willingness to partner with the Habitat cause.
Funding for Habitat homes is generated through donations from individuals, churches, organizations and grants from charitable foundations. Labor for the construction projects is volunteered by private citizens, groups and professional contractors who choose to donate or discount their services.
The local Habitat organization collects aluminum beverage containers as a means of generating income to defray construction costs. To arrange for the donation or collection of aluminum cans, contact John Stretcher at 283-8252.
Representatives from this local board are available to make informational presentations to groups and organizations. If you are interested in arranging a program, contact Jessie Kaye at 283-7920.
