There’s a lot of useful information in THIS PIECE by Jonathan Cohn, and here’s the upshot of it all:
Those are a lot of policy details, I know. But here’s a (relatively) simple way to think about it. Since modern health insurance first came to the United States in the 1930s, coverage has expanded, albeit fitfully, through a combination of private and public sector efforts. These efforts culminated in the Affordable Care Act, which, whatever it flaws, put in place a system that could eventually make affordable, decent coverage available to all Americans. Romney would run this process in reverse.
He ...

THIS is a national security issue, people. No jokes, please.
Oh, well. Maybe just a few.
Overweight and obese enlistees and soldiers are making it harder for recruiters to find physically fit candidates for military service… [E]very branch of the armed forces has a limit for body fat, but the military now provides waivers, probation periods and secondary screenings to enlistees who exceed it....

Everywhere I turn these days, I see political pundits declaring in tones of great certainty that this year’s presidential election will be razor-close.
I ain’t so sure about that.
Yes, for months now, the major polls have shown a tight race between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. And, yes, the respective political strengths and weaknesses of the candidates seem to be pretty well balanced.
But I’ve got a suspicion that the vote tallies won’t be as close as conventional wisdom suggests. I see a popular-vote margin of at least seven percentage points and a fairly lopsided verdict in the ...

Political pundit E.J. Dionne, a practicing Catholic, DISCERNS a progressive backlash against the prevailing right-wing bent among American bishops:
Until now, bishops who believed that their leadership was aligning the institutional church too closely with the political right had voiced their doubts internally. While the more moderate and liberal bishops kept their qualms out of public view, conservative bishops have been outspoken in condemning the Obama administration and pushing a “Fortnight for Freedom” campaign aimed at highlighting “threats to religious freedom, both at home and abroad.”

Already, there are reports that some bishops will play down or largely ignore ...

Don’t tell your Republican friends about THIS. It will only confuse them:
Almost everyone believes that Obama has presided over a massive increase in federal spending, an “inferno” of spending that threatens our jobs, our businesses and our children’s future. Even Democrats seem to think it’s true.
But it didn’t happen. Although there was a big stimulus bill under Obama, federal spending is rising at the slowest pace since Dwight Eisenhower brought the Korean War to an end in the 1950s.
Even hapless Herbert Hoover managed to increase spending more than Obama has.

After adjusting for inflation, spending ...

I love stuff like THIS:
Mitt Romney isn’t very far into the vice presidential selection process. But according to a dedicated band of conspiracy theorists, the pick is all but a lock: Sen. Marco Rubio.
That’s the current thinking among a worldwide collection of activists who are obsessed with the secretive Bilderberg Group, an alternating roster of global power players who loom as large — if not larger — in the online fever swamps of the fringe as the Trilateral Commission or the Council on Foreign Relations.
The Bilderberg Group, which takes its name from the Dutch hotel where
The great thing about something like THIS is that conservatives can’t easily argue that the poll is a product of the so-called liberal media.
By the way, speaking of Fox and polls, I see HERE that some folks at Fox don’t like it when the company’s own poll produces unwelcome results....

Given the wide reach of the Associated Press, THIS PIECE has the potential to become a big topic in the national political conversation:
Are Republican lawmakers deliberately stalling the economic recovery to hurt President Barack Obama’s re-election chances? Some top Democrats say yes, pointing to GOP stances on the debt limit and other issues that they claim are causing unnecessary economic anxiety and retarding growth.
The latest Democratic complaint came after House Speaker John Boehner said Tuesday that when Congress raises the nation’s borrowing cap in early 2013, he will again insist on big spending cuts to offset the increase. Boehner, R-Ohio, ...
