NEWTON —
Peter Banning M.S., LMFT, recently joined the Prairie View Center for Sexual Health staff.
He provides therapy to children and adolescents with sexual behavior problems, to adults who are sexual offenders, and to children, adults, couples and families in general. Banning also is a team member of the Back on Track program for children who have sexually offended, the Stepping Stones program for adolescents with sexual behavior problems or a history of abusive sexual behaviors, and the Sex Offender Treatment Program for adults. Banning previously worked as a therapist/case manager at St. Francis Academy, offering therapy for families, couples and individuals. He provided training for families and groups in areas such as basic parenting, common sense/positive parenting, parenting adolescence, anger management, domestic violence and budgeting. He has served as a minister in various churches in Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas since 1991, and is currently the senior minister of the Christian Church in Florence. It was his experience in Christian ministry that led Banning to seek a career in marriage and family therapy. “I have been in the Christian ministry for over 20 years and saw the need for advancement in marriage and family therapy,” he said. For Banning, it was the “faith-based offering of mental health services to the surrounding communities” that led him to Prairie View. He holds undergraduate degrees in Christian Education and Biblical Literature from Ozark Christian College, Joplin, Mo., and a master’s degree in Family Therapy from Friends University in Wichita. He graduated from the certificate program from Kansas City Play Therapy Institute in May 2009. Banning soon will receive his clinical licensure, and serves as a Kansas Health Solutions provider for In-Home Family Therapy. Prairie View is a private, faith-based, behavioral and mental health services provider, offering a complete range of behavioral and psychiatric services for children, adolescents, adults and older adults, as well as consultation services to businesses and organizations. In addition to the main campus, including outpatient offices and a psychiatric hospital in Newton, Prairie View has outpatient locations in Hillsboro, Hutchinson, McPherson and Wichita.
