Workforce centers add computers to help Kansans file for unemployment online

Kansans now can file for unemployment benefits online—and get free assistance—at any of four state workforce centers in Topeka, Wichita, Overland Park and Kansas City.

The Kansas Department of Labor, the Kansas Department of Commerce and local workforce centers have teamed up to install dedicated computer stations at the four workforce centers to help claimants file online applications, update their personal information and file their weekly claims once they’ve been approved for benefits.

Claimants have long been able to file for benefits online, but the dedicated computer stations at the workforce centers now make that possible for Kansans who don’t have computers at home or who need help completing the online application.

Each center has up to four dedicated computers, and KDOL has assigned eight employees – two per workforce center – to assist people in filing their online applications. While these employees cannot determine eligibility for claimants, they can answer questions about the online application process.

“Using our online service is still the fastest and easiest way for claimants to file for unemployment and to update their information,” said Secretary of Labor Jim Garner. “Because many of our claimants are visiting these specific workforce centers to seek assistance with their job search, it only made sense to have this service available at these locations.”

Adding dedicated computers to the workforce centers is part of an overall effort to encourage more people to file online and thus reduce the overwhelming number of calls that come into KDOL’s Contact Center every day.

KDOL has also streamlined the online application, making it simpler and easier to file. The agency is also developing a desk reference and online tutorial that will provide a step-by-step guide to filing for unemployment benefits.

“With the addition of the KDOL employees at the workforce centers, we hope to see an increase in claimants filing online and some relief for the phone congestion at our Contact Center,” said Kay Haug, KDOL’s Director of Unemployment Insurance Customer Service.
