for Garden City

GARDEN CITY — The Pecos League of Professional Baseball Clubs has announced an expansion team for Garden City for the 2015 season.

The Garden City Wind will be the eighth team in the league, joining the Las Vegas (N.M.) Train Robbers, the Santa Fe Fuego, the Trinidad Triggers, the Alpine Cowboys, the Las Cruces Vaqueros, the Roswell Invaders and White Sand PupFish.

Las Vegas, Garden City, Santa Fe and Trindad will play in the Northern Division. The other teams will play in the Southern Division.

The team will play a 70-game schedule. The league is independent with no Major League affiliations. Players are paid between $300 and $500 a month.

The season runs from May 19 to July 28 with playoffs to follow.

The Santa Fe Fuego is the defending champion. Roswell has won two titles.

The league began in 2011 with six teams, expanded to eight in 2013, expanded to 10 last season and contracted to eight this season.

"We are excited to play the 2015 season in Garden City, I believe it will fit perfectly with the other seven cities in the league," league commissioner and ownewr Andrew Dunn said. "The people are Garden City have been extremely welcoming and Clint Lightner Ballpark will continue our mission to upgrade facilities in our league."

The Wind will play at Clint Lightner Ballpark, pending a final agreement with the city. The ballpark recently added a new light package and artificial turf, making it the first ballpark in the league with artificial turf. The park is currently home to the Garden City High School team, summer teams and a local tournament.

It will be the third professional team in Kansas, joining the Wichita Wingnuts and Kansas City (Kan.) T-Bones, both of the independent American Association.

Garden City will host spring training for both the Wind and for Trinidad. Tryout information is available at eric.schiff@pecosleague.com, or by calling (314) 874-6774.
