  • Most of the Newton High School fall sports teams were either scrimmaging or being introduced Friday at the Newton Fall Activities Fest at the high school, Chisholm Middle School or Fischer Field.
With one practice remaining before the season opener at Class 4-3-2-1A power Rose Hill, the NHS soccer team scrimmage for about 45 minutes.
While coach Scott Jantzi tried to balance the teams out, the black squad managed a 3-0 win over the white squad.
"We have one training session left before Rose Hill," Jantzi said. "Rose Hill is a consistent team that usually makes it into (the Class 4-3-2-1A) state tournament and usually into the final four. We've had some quality games against them. They've been one-goal matches throughout. It's a good test for the guys.
"We're working hard. We're trying to develop team unity. We did a good job tonight of knocking the ball around. The black squad created more opportunities and were able to finish. I tried to even up the squads as much as I could. Overall, I was pleased and saw some good stuff from the younger players."
Newton football coach Nate Wollenberg prepares for the final week of preseason with a 45-minute scrimmage.
"I thought that both sides of the ball, we hustled," Wollenberg said. "For most of the scrimmage, we did quite a few things well. We need to work on a few things that we saw tonight. I'm sure there are things on film that we will need to work on as well. We kept it pretty basic on both sides of the ball."
Early in the night, the offense was a little ahead of the defense, breaking several plays open for long gains.
"There were some things the offense did well," Wollenberg said. "Early on, it looked like they were moving a bit faster. The offense was coming off the ball faster and the defense was a little more tentative."
The gridders open the season Friday at Campus.
"Starting tomorrow, we really start to worry about that opponent," Wollenberg said. "Up to that point, we've just been trying to get things in place. We were practicing against multiple looks. Now, we'll focus on Campus and work on what we'll need to look for Friday night."
