ELBING — With six letterwinners, including four starters back, the Berean Academy volleyball team will look to climb back into the Heart of America League race for 2014.

Amy Vogt begins her 15th season leading the Warriors, where she is 169-249. She is assisted by Anne Morrow, who handles the junior varsity.

Berean Academy was 7-22 last season. In the post-season, the Warriors fell to eventual Class 2A state champion Hillsboro in the sub-state semifinals.

Returning starters include 5-foot-6 senior outside hitter-defensive specialist Ally Vogt, 5-9 senior middle blocker Becca Entz, 5-6 sophomore setter-outside hitter Lizzi Landis and 5-8 sophomore outside hitter-middle blocker Megan Hendrickson.

Ally Vogt led the team in aces, passing, digs and serving percentage. Entz led the team in kills and blocks.

Other letterwinners returning are seniors Eleigh Kennedy, a defensive specialist; and Jenn Claassen, an outside hitter.

Other top varsity candidates include 5-6 senior Keren Duerksen, sophomore setter-outside hitter Meghan Dunn and freshman Ashtyn Wiebe.

Other returning players include 5-8 junior right-side hitter-middle blocker Taryn Wiebe, junior setter Madeleine Stevens, sophomore right-side hitter Rhea Nelson and sophomore back row player Annika Heptig.

Newcomers include sophomore Amanda Harder and freshmen Aubrey Wilgers, Bailey Spencer, Mackenzie Womack, Hannah Stucky, Cassidy Entz, Shannon Busenitz and Lauren Whiteman.

"We are looking to build on our season from last year," Amy Vogt said. "We will not be very tall, but we will have a stronger hitting team, and looking forward to being very competitive in league this year."

The Warrior coach is looking at Remington, Hutchinson Trinity and Sedgwick as the top contenders for the HOAL crown this season. Top non-conference opponents include Cheney, Sterling, Halstead and Smoky Valley.
