  • The Newton High School boys' soccer team graduated a large senior class last year but the cupboard may not completely bare for the Railers.
Scott Jantzi begins his 11th season with the Railers, where he is 98-70-10. He is assisted by Robin Montano and Adam Jantzi, who both lead the junior varsity as well as assist the varsity.
Newton was 9-5-3 last season, 3-2-1 in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League play. Newton was upset by Hays in the first round of the Class 5A regionals last year.
"We've got some very good seniors, but we have a lot of young kids we will have to work in," Scott Jantzi said. "We have a very good sophomore class, but they are going to have to step up to be able to play at this level. A lot of our kids have played club soccer, and when they haven't been playing club, they have been finding ways to play together. We had three teams play in the Bethel summer league this year. That kind of experience is going to help us."
Four starters return for Newton — senior goalkeeper Gustavo Castillo, senior midfielder Cesar Sanchez, senior midfielder Olvin Romero and junior defender Reid Loganbill.
Other returning letterwinners include senior forward Caleb Woodward, senior midfielder Tyler Cornejo, junior midfielder Juan Castillo, junior midfielder Calvin Fox, sophomore defender Josh Jantzi and sophomore forward Carlos Cornejo.
"Our team should have a winning record, but will take its bumps and bruises throughout the season," Scott Jantzi said. "We lost a lot of goals from last year. This season's returners only had a handful of goals, but have the talent to generate what we lost. Finding those combinations up front will be key. Defensively we should do alright. They are all hard workers and very coachable. This team will need to depend on each other throughout. We don't have any superstars that can take over games."
Jantzi looks for Salina South, Derby and Maize to be among the top contenders for the AV-CTL I title. Top non-league foes include Andover, Andover Central, Rose Hill and Goddard.
