  • Recently, I was honored by the Newton community with a "Lifetime Achievement Award." It was a humbling experience and a major milestone in my life. Newton is unique in its bestowing these honors on its NHS graduates, and, as an honoree, I want to thank the selection committee, as well as the community as a whole, for my selection.
Newton as a community encourages education, personal responsibility and hard work as tools for individual success. These tools are subtly instilled by our teachers and coaches at NHS. In my case, this was largely done by Coach John Ravenscroft, math teacher Edith Whitted, and English teacher Dorothy Sanford.
The Christian principles of service, charity and faith were shared with me by a Mennonite family, Al and Aggie Klassen, when they took me into their home as their own when my family moved away from Newton.
I'm very proud to receive the accolades of my "home community," but more deserving of the "Lifetime Achievement Award" are Newton High School and the Newton community itself for the many achievers it spawns.
