The finals of the 14U Babe Ruth Softball Kansas State Championship game was a back-and-forth affair between Udall and Conway Springs.

Udall played from behind for most of the day, but rallied late to claim a 10-9 win Sunday at Kelsch Field.

In the third-place game, Cottonwood Valley downed Andover 9-3.

Udall, Conway Springs and Cottonwood Valley all qualified for the Babe Ruth Softball Regional Tournament next weekend in Lamar, Colo. Conway Springs declined its bid. Andover could still be issued an invitation to the regionals.

"That was probably the best game we have ever played as a whole team," Udall coach Todd Morgan said. "We came out yesterday and put 18 runs up in one inning. Today, if we would just bring our bats and our defense together, we'd win. The girls fought hard. They came from four different towns (Udall, Belle Plaine, Derby and Douglass), but they came together and won the championship.

"It was the first time we got to play (Conway Springs). They were in our league, but we never got to play them. They run-ruled teams that beat us."

Rylie Cox got the win for Udall in relief of Camry Morgan. Cox struck out four, while Morgan struck out two. Kayla Koester took the loss for Conway Springs in relief of Lacy Pauly. Pauly struck out six, while Koester struck out two.

Rylee Dozel was two for three hitting for Udall, driving in a run. Morgan drove in three. No Conway Springs player had more than one hit. Sammie Osner drove in two runs.

Osner won the WOW award for Conway Springs, while Jera Walke won the SHE award. Hannah Powell won the WOW award for Udall, while Morgan won the SHE award.

Conway Springs opened the top of the first with a pair of runs on three hits. Udall replied with a run in the bottom of the first. A two-out error in the bottom of the third allowed Udall to tie the game.

Conway Springs loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth inning. Osner hit a two-run single. Conway Springs then scored a run on a ground out and another on a wild pitch. A pair of Conway Springs errors in the bottom of the fifth allowed Udall to score four runs and tie the game. Cammy Morgan hit a two-run single in the inning.

Conway Springs used three hits an two walks in the top of the sixth inning to score three runs. Two hits and three runs in the bottom of the sixth led to four Udall runs.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, Conway Springs had two batters reach on errors. A strikeout ended the game.

While the Udall coach said he doesn't know much about the regional field, he will look for his team to be competitive next week.

"We're going to do everything in our power to do well at regional," Todd Morgan said. "They deserve it."

In the third-place game, each team got out of a jam by striking out the side in the first inning.

Using three hits, three walks and an error, Cottonwood Valley scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Two errors in the bottom of the fifth led to another Cottonwood Valley run.

Andover loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth inning, scoring two runs. Cottonwood Valley also loaded the bases with not outs in the bottom of the sixth, leading to five runs.

Andover used a pair of singles in the top of the seventh for a run.

For Cottonwood Valley, Mesa Merrel went two for four with three RBIs. Tori Schultz went two for four with two RBIs. Melissa Filkin drove in two runs.

Filkin pitched for the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.

Andover pitcher Sydney Sagehorn took the loss, allowing two earned runs on six hits with six walks and 11 strikeouts.

Bailey Bloom went three for four hitting for Andover.

Bloom was the WOW award winner for Andover, while Sage Edwards was the SHE award winner. Schultz was the WOW award winner for Cottonwood Valley, while Taylor Everett was the SHE award winner.

Host Newton finished the tournament 0-3. Newton finished pool play Saturday with a 19-0 loss to Conway Springs. In the first round of bracket play, Newton fell to Cottonwood Falls 18-3.
