  • When the Valley Center DiamondDawgs had runners on base, they moved them. When the Newton Rebels had runners on base, the didn't.
The results was an 8-1 Rebels loss Thursday in non-league play at Klein-Scott Field. Newton outhit the DiamondDawgs 9-8, but the Rebels stranded 13 baserunners. The Rebels also struggled defensively with six errors.
"We outhit them and about quadrupled them in errors," Newton manager Brad Salsman said. "We didn't have any knocks in crucial situations. We had some singles spread out in the game, but no hits with runners in scoring position. We had errors. We left so many runners on base, we got what was coming to us."
Valley Center, 24-3, opened the scoring on a two-run Jake Bublitz double with two outs in the first inning. Newton stranded five runners total in the first three innings of play.
Three hits and three errors in the top of the seventh led to three Valley Center runs. Newton put runners at first and second base with one out in the bottom of the seventh and left them stranded. An error in the top of the eighth led to another Valley Center run.
Newton finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth when Joel Frias hit an RBI single with out out. Kayden Quin replied with a two-run double in the top of the ninth. Newton stranded two more runners in the
Newton starter Braden Sager took the loss. Craig Bastert pitched the final two innings.
Frias went two for three for Newton. Chris Pinne and Logan Knox each went two for five. Quin went two for five for Valley Center.
Newton, 9-20, plays at 6 p.m. Saturday at Hutchinson and hosts Park City at 6 p.m. Sunday. Both dates have been changed to doubleheaders to make up rain outs.
"We're very lucky this game didn't count in the record," Salsman said. "Hopefully, we'll remain 2 1/2 back (in the Walter Johnson League North) going into this weekend, so we still control our own destiny, but we have to play better baseball."
