The cause of an accident which claimed the life of teacher Crystal Stauffer of Newton will not result in criminal charges, according to the Harvey County Sheriff's Department.
Harvey County Sheriff's Department investigators believe the accident to have been caused by the driver, Kayla Horton, 40, of Halstead, rolling her window back up after having dust blown into her car by a passing vehicle. When the driver looked up, she had no time to respond and stop from hitting Stauffer.
No charges are being filed at this time.
The accident occurred at about 4 p.m. June 3 in the area of N.W. 12th Street between West and Meridian. Stauffer was transported by Newton Fire/EMS in critical condition to Newton Medical Center where she later was pronounced dead. Horton did not suffer any physical injuries.
