  • School teacher killed in accident

  • Crystal Stauffer, 28, physical education teacher at a Newton middle school, has been identified as the pedestrian who died after being struck by a car Tuesday near Newton, the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
    She recently coached the Harvey County Wildcats Special Olympics team at the Kansas Special Olympics State Basketball Tournament — coaching The Powercats to a division title.
    At about 4 p.m. June 3 first responders from the Harvey County Sheriff’s Office, Newton Police Department, North Newton Police Department and Newton Fire/EMS responded to the scene of a motor vehicle vs. pedestrian accident in the area of 12th Street between West and Meridian. According to the sheriff's department, a passenger car traveling west bound on 12th struck Stauffer.
    She  was taken by Newton Fire/EMS in critical condition to Newton Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead. The driver of the vehicle, a 40 year old female from Halstead, did not sustain any injuries.
    The accident is still under investigation.
