  • Sen. Bob Dole will make a visit to Newton, hosting a meeting from 7 to 8 p.m. at The Kansas Sports Musuem in the Chisholm Trail Shopping Center, 601 S.E. 36th.
The visit will come at the end of a day, which includes visits to Manhattan, Junction City, Abilene, Salina and McPherson. The four day tour includes 16 cities.
“I’m making my way across the state of Kansas during several trips this year,” Senator Dole said. “I hope to see friends and former supporters of mine, and I am looking forward to enjoying lots of cookies along the way — preferably oatmeal raisin and chocolate.”
In 1968, Dole defeated Kansas Governor William H. Avery for the Republican nomination for the United States Senate to succeed retiring Senator Frank Carlson, subsequently being elected. Dole was re-elected in 1974, 1980, 1986, and 1992, before resigning on June 11, 1996, to focus on a Presidential campaign.
In 1997, Dole received the U.S. Senator John Heinz Award for Greatest Public Service by an Elected or Appointed Official, an award given out annually by Jefferson Awards.
Professionally, Senator Dole is Special Counsel to the prestigious law firm of Alston & Bird in Washington, D.C.
Dole was born and raised in Russell.
