TOPEKA — The Newton High School boys' tennis team opened the season with a second-place finish Saturday at a four-team meet at the Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.
Washburn Rural won the meet.
In singles play, Preston Ford finished 1-2, Jordan Singh finished 2-1 and Tre Kremeier finished 2-1.
In doubles play, Josh Carlgren and Riley Kingsley finished 3-0. Shawn Bontrager and Adam Ford finished 2-1.
"We're off to a great start for the season," Newton coach Scott Sisson said. "We have a very deep team this year and that was demonstrated with a strong performance on Saturday."
Results from Monday's meet at McPherson were not received at deadline.

The Kansas Cougars semi-pro football team improved to 3-0 after a 55-6 win over the Oklahoma Tornados Saturday at Fischer Field.
Stewart Lee rushed for 67 yards with two touchdowns for Kansas. DePaul Murdock and Kyle Spencer each added a rushing touchdown. Spencer hit three of nine passes for 33 yards and a touchdown. Cephus Jefferson caught the touchdown pass.
On defense, P.J. Clay had five tackles, including 3.5 sacks. Jerome Johnson added 3.0 sacks. Romaine Green had two interceptions, followed by John Collins with one. Ezekiel Adair recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
The Cougars host the Enid Enforcers at 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Fischer Field. The Wichita Gators youth team will play the Junior Enforcers at noon.
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. — The season came to an end for the Wichita Thunder after a 5-3 loss to the Arizona Sundogs Saturday at the Tim's Toyota Center in Central Hockey League play.
Down 3-2 after two periods, Arizona scored three goals in the third period to win the game.
Shawn Limpright and Paul McIlveen each scored two goals with an assist for Arizona. Matt McCready, Bryan Cameron and Brandon Coccimiglio each added a goal.
Matt Summers scored two goals for Wichita. Tomas Klempa added a goal. Mike Wilson, R.G. Flath, Jarkko Leppanen and Andrew Martens each added an assist.
Adam Brown had 24 saves in goal for the Sundogs for the win. Taylor Nelson had 41 saves for Wichita in the loss.
Arizona, 32-27-7, took the eighth and final seed in the CHL playoffs. Wichita ends the season 27-30-9, four games out of a playoff spot.
