Although millions of viewers across the United States watched Kaleigh Glanton's audition on NBC's singing competition "The Voice," she's already a familiar face for those in North Newton.
The 20-year-old singer is a favorite past performer at Mojo's Coffee Bar on the Bethel College campus, and her father, Howard Glanton, is an adjunct guitar instructor at Bethel. She'll be coming to Mojo's at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 27.
"She's a lot of fun," said Patty Meier, owner of Mojo's. "She's got a really unique quality to her voice. It's been a lot of fun to watch 'The Voice' and wait for her to be on."
"The Voice" is a popular TV singing competition featuring four celebrity "coaches": Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Shakira and Usher. Coaches sit in chairs facing away from the performers; if they like a contestant's voice, they turn around and try to recruit the singer for their team.
Kaleigh Glanton's performance of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain" appeared to impress the coaches, who all turned around and tried to recruit her for their team. She selected "Team Blake."
"For me the exciting thing about it is, it was just different," Levine commented on Glanton's performance. "The moments that were great were really, really great."
"There is a very unique quality to your voice, and also too this very gentle tone," Usher told her.
Glanton's style is described as an "indie folk sound." She will be advancing to the next round of the competition.
Glanton's first performance at Mojo's was in the fall of 2011, and her most recent was in December 2013. Meier said the last time Glanton performed at Mojo's they already knew she had an audition with "The Voice" but weren't allowed to advertise it. Now, Meier is excited to let the secret out.
"It has been fun to watch Kaleigh grow and mature as a singer," she said. "Kaleigh has always delighted Mojo's audiences as she sang and played guitar, both with her dad and solo. ... We always loved to have Kaleigh perform — she consistently impressed our audiences with her talent and personality."
