SALINA The Newton High School boys' bowling team missed a trip to state as a team by eight pins after a third-place finish in the Class 5-4-3-2-1A Regional at All-Star Lanes in Salina.

The Railer girls finished fourth out of 11 teams.

Newton did qualify five individuals.

In the boys' team competition, host Salina Sacred Heart won the meet at 2,685. McPherson was second at 2,658. The top two teams qualify for state. Newton was third at 2,650.

Newton was led by Brogan Owens, who took fourth at 682. Gabe Serrano finished eighth at 664. Tylar Brockman was 10th at 648. The top six bowlers not on the top two teams qualify for state as individuals.

In the girls' competition, McPherson won at 2,484, followed by Wichita Heights at 2,422. Great Bend was third at 2,322. Newton was fourth at 2,149.

Newton was led by Melina Schrader, who took 10th at 560. Lexi Pauls was 12th at 527.

The Class 5-4-3-2-1A State Championships are March 7 at Northrock Lanes in Wichita. The boys bowl at 9:30 a.m., followed by the girls at 2 p.m.
