The Newton High School girls' basketball team ended the regular season with a 44-37 loss to Maize Friday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division I play.

Newton fell behind 10-3 after the first quarter and 25-15 at the half. Newton was down by 11 after three quarters. A Railer rally in the fourth quarter fell short.

"They are just a very good team," Newton coach Randy Jordan said. "We made some mistakes defensively. We didn't get in the right defense a couple of times and they hit two threes in the first quarter. We got that straightened out. We guarded well all night. We just had a hard time getting a shot off. A lot of that had to do with their size and athleticism.

"I feel like we played with them most of the night. We battled the entire night. We got within three. Then they made some plays. They are very skilled and very athletic. They missed some free throws. We had some good looks. They just didn't go down."

It was the second time this week the Railers fell to Maize. The Eagles improve to 16-4, 11-1 in AV-CTL I play. Maize ties with Salina Central for the league title.

Daley Handy led Maize with 13 points. Keiryn Swenson added 10 points.

For Newton, Taylor Stahly scored 15 points. Jacque Anderson and Hannah Carlgren each added nine points.

Anderson, Carlgren and Logan Porter were honored as the team's seniors.

Newton is 13-7, 8-4 in AV-CTL I play. Newton hosts Valley Center at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Class 5A sub-state semifinals.

"They are playing better," Jordan said. "They have some younger players who they brought up who are playing better. They mix their defenses up during the game. We did a good job of that the first time we played them. We just need confidence that our shots will go down. We have to shoot and believe it will go in, instead of hoping."
