HUTCHINSON For the second straight night, the Newton High School boys' basketball team gave a strong defensive effort, but couldn't score, falling to Hutchinson 50-40 Tuesday in AV-CTL I play in Hutchinson.

"Let's give Hutch some credit," Newton coach Don Cameron said. "They came out with a lot of energy. I thought we came out very flat. Hutch out hustled us and out played us. Our kids fought, but we were out energized. They were the 'Energizer Bunny' and we weren't. We can make excuses, but they won and we didn't."

Hutchinson, 10-9 overall and 5-6 in AV-CTL I play, was led by Jezel Parra and Ryan Stoecklien with 13 points each. Braydon Wells added 10 points.

Newton was led by Gunar Drinnen with 12 points.

Newton led 5-2 early, but gave up an 11-0 run. Newton trailed 15-7 at the end of the quarter.

Neither team was able to do much on the offensive end in the second quarter. Newton scored first on a short Drinnen jumper, followed by six straight for Hutchinson. Drinnen closed the scoring in the half with a trey. Newton trailed 21-12 at the half.

Newton gave up an 6-2 run to start the third quarter. Newton got back within nine, but Hutchinson pulled back out by 12 at the end of the period, 34-22.

Jack Kingsley converted a three-point play with five minutes remaining in regulation to get Newton within nine. Sam Lehman hit two free throws with 3:31 remaining to get Newton within seven. Hutchinson initially struggled at the line late, but Newton was unable to get closer than seven points.

"Any time we did something that gave us a little energy, Hutch usually responded," Cameron said. "When you're not sharp with the ball, it's hard to get anything inside. Inside is an art. We have to play with energy. I was pleased the guys did not quit. We missed four or five cribbies (layups) that rolled around and did not go in. That would have been eight to 10 more points."

Newton hosts Maize at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a rematch of Monday's games.

"We'll do some things different (from Monday)," Cameron said. "Our guys will be alright. We can make some things happen."
