  • What are elementary school children reading?
    The Newton Kansan asked students at Slate Creek about their reading material, and here are there answers:
    Jada Childs, Second Grade
    What are you reading now?
    "Warrior Cats" It's actually a series. The book she is reading now is about "a cat who joins a group of cats in the forest. They hunt rabbits and birds."
    What is your favorite book?
    Childs said she doesn't have a favorite, there are too many books to choose from.
    Why is reading important?
    "It is fun and I learn a lot."
    Maddie Duncan, Fourth Grade
    What are you reading now?
    "The Healing Spell"
    Kimberley Griffiths Little. Twelve-year-old Livie is living with a secret and it's crushing her. She knows she is responsible for her mother's coma, but she can't tell anyone. It's up to her to find a way to wake her momma up.
    "She has to find nine good memories of her mother," Duncan said.
    What is your favorite book?
    "The Mark of Athena" by Rick Riordan. A best seller. Part of The Heroes of Olympus series.
    Why is reading important?
    "I like reading because it gives me something to do," Duncan said. "I can sit down, read something and be transported. I can feel like I am one of the characters inside the book."

    What are you reading now?
    "True." "It is a book about kids with disabilities."
    What is your favorite book?
    "True."
    Why is reading important?
    "Without reading, there would be no mysteries or solving stuff," Koehn said.
