Kapaun-Mt. Carmel 56, Dodge City 27

The Dodge City Red Demon girls' basketball team ran into a buzz saw Thursday in top-ranked (KBCA, Class 5A) and unbeaten Kapaun-Mt. Carmel, falling 56-27 in the first round of the 38th Newton Invitational Tournament at Ravenscroft Gym.

Kapaun, 11-0, advances to the semifinals at 8:15 p.m. today. Dodge City, 4-5, plays in the consolation semifinals at 4:45 p.m.

Kapaun was led by Sam Bachrodt with 19 points, hitting three 3-pointers, and 6-foot-1 Sydney Kuhn, who scored 16 points.

Dodge City was led by Katrina Roenfeldt with nine points.

Kapaun tied a tournament record for fewest free throw attempts in the game. The Crusaders didn't shoot a free throw in the game. There were only 14 fouls called, nine against Kapaun. Dodge City was five of six from the line.

The Red Demons jumped out to a 5-3 lead, but Kapaun finally started hitting its shots and ended the first quarter with an 11-3 run.

Kapaun opened the second quarter with a 10-5 run. The Red Demons were held to just two field goal attempts in the first 5 1/2 minutes of the period. Dodge City took a time out, but couldn't stop the bleeding as the Crusaders led 28-13 at the half.

Kapaun hit 13 of 34 from the field in the first half, while Dodge City was four of 11. The Red Demons had 11 turnovers in the first half to two for Kapaun.

Rachel Durler scored Dodge City's first point of the second half one of two free throws with 4:44 remaining in the period. Kapaun struggled to hit shots, but still made the 6-1 run. Kapaun led 40-19 at the end of the period. Dodge City had eight turnovers in the quarter.

Kapaun opened the fourth quarter on a 7-3 run, then dumped the bench for the remaining 2:45.

Bishop Carroll 50, Garden City 42

A 17-6 third quarter lifted Bishop Carroll to a 50-42 win over Garden City in the first round of the Newton Invitational Tournament.

Carroll, 9-2, advances to the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. today. Garden City plays in the consolation semifinals at 3 p.m.

Carroll was led by Jordyn Miller with 15 points and Shelby Lopez with 14.

Garden City, 8-4, was led by Taryn Temple with 14 points.

Bishop Carroll struggled with turnovers early, falling behind 8-2, but Garden City started turning the ball over late in the period, allowing the Eagles to get within four at the end of the period, 12-8.

Carroll finally caught up to the Buffaloes in the second quarter, taking a one-point lead. The game was tied at the half, 23-23.

Carroll opened the third quarter on an 11-2 run. Carroll led 40-29 at the end of the period. Garden City got no closer than eight points in the fourth quarter.

Bishop Miege 71, Olathe NW 44

In a rematch of last season's Newton Invitational Tournament finals, Bishop Miege downed Olathe Northwest 71-44 Thursday in a first-round game at Ravenscroft Gym.

Miege took advantage of 26 Northwest turnovers to take control of the game and improve to 9-2. The Ravens fall to 6-5.

Hunter Bentley led Miege with 16 points, followed by Madeline Homoly with 12.

Shaleia Jameson led Northwest with 11 points.

Twelve Northwest turnovers in the first quarter allowed Miege to jump out to a 17-10 lead. Northwest continued to struggle with ball handling in the second quarter and Miege continued to pull away. The Stags led by as many as 18 in the second quarter and led 40-25 at the half.

Northwest finished the first half with 19 turnovers to seven for Meige.

Miege continued to pull away in the third quarter, leading by 20 at the end of the period, 54-34.

Miege faces Bishop Carroll in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Northwest faces Garden City in the consolation semifinals at 3 p.m.
