  • The Bethel College men's basketball team found itself in a game for about 25 of 40 minutes against the Saint Mary Spires, but the final 15 were too much to overcome in a 76-55 loss Saturday at Thresher Gym.
Up by four early in the second half, the Threshers were soon down by 20. Bethel falls to 0-15, 0-6 in KCAC play. The Spires improve to 10-6, 4-2 in the KCAC.
It was Bethel's first game at Thresher Gym this season.
"The Bethel drought hurt us," Bethel coach Alonzo Jamison said. "They went on a 10-0, 12-0 run, and we never recovered. This was a game I thought very winnable. Both teams didn't play very well. It was right there for us. This is the kind of game that at the end of the year, they're going to kick themselves."
Tied 12-12, Saint Mary went on a 5-0 run. The Spires started hitting outside and was able to lead by as many as 11. Bethel got as close as two with 1:56 remaining in the half.
Shiron Williams hit one of two free throws with 3.2 seconds remaining in the first half to send the Spires into the locker room leading by three, 31-28.
Bethel opened the second half with the first four points, but was called for five fouls in the first three minutes of the period, allowing the Spires to score the next five points. An Akakpo trey with 13:59 remaining in regulation put the Spires up by 10.
Bethel answered with a Robbie Wright trey, but the Spires came back with a 6-0 run. Bethel picked up its 10th foul with 9:57 to play, while the Spires had just five.
"I look up and (fouls are) 10-3, or something like that," Jamison said. "Eighty percent of it was us, but there were some calls that should have been called. It is a foul or it's not a foul. Stop using your judgement and call the play. We're fighting ourselves as it is. Our kids look at me, and they look defeated. Then we get no calls when we're supposed to get calls. What am I supposed to tell the kids? I'm going to fight for them."
Bethel fell back by 20, got back to within 12, then fell back to 22.
Bethel hosts 19th-ranked (NAIA II) Friends at 8 p.m. Thursday. After dropping the first two games of the season, the Falcons are on a 15-game winning streak. The Falcons downed Bethany 100-82 Saturday.
"We have to continue to get better," Jamison said. "Today, we didn't get better. We have to get better against a better team. The last three weeks of competition, we've been in every game except one. We need something to get over the hump. We really need something to get over the hump, and that's my job. We're flirting with it, but that's all."
