PARK CITY — The first-year Wichita B-52s indoor soccer team made its debut in the U.S. Open Arena Cup with a second-quarter ambush of the semi-pro Denver Dynamite to claim a 15-6 win Saturday at Hartman Arena.
Up 3-2 after the first quarter, the B-52s scored seven goals in the second quarter to lead 10-4 at the half.
Denver is a member of the Premier Arena Soccer League, a level below the Professional Arena Soccer League, of which the B-52s are a member. Denver entered the game 3-4-1. Wichita was 3-4. The game won't count in league play for either team.
"I saw a lot of very positive things," Wichita coach Larry Inlow said. "We played a lot of young players today, especially on defense. This was the first game for several guys. It was the first game for Nathan Keith, our goalkeeper. We had a couple of breakdowns, but overall, we played well. We have some very big games coming up, and a positive result like this can help us prepare for those games. We only get three days of practice before those games."
Heviel Cordoves scored four goals to lead the B-52s.
"We're on a bit of a winning streak right now," Cordoves said. "But we have two of our toughest games coming up against Dallas. We wanted to keep momentum for that. The other team wasn't very organized on defense. That was the reason we were scoring. Our coach just told us to turn them and shoot. As long as we were on target, we were going to score."
Nathan Aragano Lima Modesto scored three goals with three assists for the B-52s. Brent Hobson added two goals with an assist. Kevin Jackson scored two goals. Larry Martinez scored a goal with two assists. Matt Clare and Brady Bryant each scored a goal with an assist. Alex Mosely also scored a goal.
For Denver, Tony Avery scored three goals with an assist. George Hunt, Luke Burgard and Travis Carey each added a goal.
Wichita scored in the first 98 seconds of play. Denver got back in the game on a one-versus-goal charge by George Hunt.
Wichita's first goal, by Cordoves in the first 16 seconds, set a franchise record for quickest goal.
Up 4-3 early in the second period, Wichita went on a 6-1 run. The last two goals of the quarter for Wichita were shorthanded. The final goal of the half, a 120-foot shot by Hobson, broke a franchise record for most goals.
"We let down a little," Cordoves said. "The coach got on us and told us we can't let down on any team. No team is going to be easy. That's when we started playing better."
Wichita added three unanswered goals in the third quarter.
Denver broke the scoring drought 12 seconds into the fourth quarter on an Avery restart at the top of the goal arc.
Jordan Howes had 22 saves for Denver. Nathan Keith had nine saves for Wichita.
Wichita has back-to-back games against Dallas, playing Thursday in Allen, Texas; and 7:05 p.m. Saturday at home. Dallas is tied for second in the PASL Central Division at 6-1. Wichita is 4 1/2 games behind leader Monterrey and three games behind Dallas and Hildago.
"Dallas is one of the best teams in the league right now," Inlow said. "This game can give us a lift for those games."
